Modesty Blaise Presentation

I will be presenting on Modesty Blaise
at this year's Comic Arts Conference at Wonder Con. I'm scheduled for Sunday.
1:00-2:30 Comic Arts Conference Session 8: Forebearers and Survivors— Doug Highsmith (California Sate University, East Bay) focuses on the changes and revamps made to post-World War II comic books in an effort to reverse flagging sales. Jennifer Stuller (Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors) provides a critical history of spy-fi princess Modesty Blaise, and finds evidence of her inspiration in modern heroines. Room 228/230

Will you be at SDCC this year as well, and doing this presentation? If so, I will definitely not miss it this time around. :)
We plan to be at SDCC this Summer--although I don't know if I'll be presenting. I haven't submitted a proposal to the CAC--my book deadline is approaching and that is taking up all my time. I would love to be invited to speak on a panel, and/or cover the convention via Blog for a web publication (and thus get a press pass) but we'll see what pans out. It would be great to go just for fun, but I really need to promote myself somehow.
Regardless, if you'll be there let's get together for a coffee or drink or something!!!
Hey, that would be great! We're planning to be there, so let's definitely get together!
Jennifer - great to meet you at the lecture! I will follow up with Trina. It left me with more questions than answers but at least I know there are other writing women out there interested in the same things I am. I really have felt like I was creating in a vacuum - if that is truly possible!
Will have to catch up on my "Lost" seems like I am missing all the fun...
Thanks again!
Hi Jennifer, I really enjoyed your presentation on Saturday. I thought it was very interesting how the strongest female roles were in British comics and how it took American comics so much longer to catch up. To me, the depowered Wonder Woman is a complicated character and, for a number of reasons, never quite reached the level of personal strength that Modesty or Cathy Gale did. I don't know if that's as much a function of the two countries as it is that Modesty was a creator-owned project and WW was corporate-owned, and owned by some very stuffy men at that.
I've never read Modesty Blaise before but upon arriving home I went to eBay to look up comics about her.
tupennybit (sorry, I forgot your name; I was the guy sitting next to you), good luck with your book.

Tuppennybit (I forgot your name too!!) and Jason--it was wonderful to meet you both in San Francisco!! I am so grateful for having an enthusiastic audience and for your thoughtful questions.
Tuppennybit--There ARE women out there writing about, drawing and discussing women in comics, television, film, video games, and other media--but I know from personal experience that it feels lonely until you get connected to those communities. It's one of the many reasons I'm doing this book.
I'm going to do a post this week with some resources that might be valuable to you--until then, check out the work of Chrissie above. She's a talented artist. Perhaps a collaboration is in order?
And Jason, I'd love to take you up on your interview offer when the book is published!
So to you both, let's keep in touch!!
