Superwomen Exploited Again (NSFW)

I don't quite know why, but this calendar bothers me more than the Wonder Woman thing.

"In the tradition of the best-selling 2007 Nerdcore™ calendar, this 2008 edition reunites famed photographer Cherie Roberts and designer/artist Jason Adam, and features tasteful, giant photography of nude girls in heroic and villainous settings. Featuring geek goddess Justine Joli, former Playboy "Cyber Playmate" Jessica Kramer, and 2007 Nerdcore™ cover girl Karlie Montana, and many other beauties.

+ NERD DATES — Regular and nerdy holidays, including over one hundred important holy days for geeks, including: Major movie releases like Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones 4, Harold and Kumar 2, and The Incredible Hulk; conventions like San Diego Comic-Con, Alternative Press Expo, etc. ; anniversaries for Night of the Living Dead and more cult classics; birthdays for Stan Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Jean Luc Picard and others ; even Sarah Connor’s assassination, the morning Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 departed, and the day Marty was sent back to the future."

Apparently, once seen, you'll believe that babes can fly.

I don't get why it bothers people. There are plenty of fucked up things in pornography, plenty of actual stuff that demeans women. Pictures of naked people, though? I don't get how it is a bad thing, let alone a Bad Thing (tm).

Well, as I already said in my previous post and comments

"pornography perpetuates the assumption that women are objects. That they have no value. That they are for male pleasure only. That they are less than whole, or complex".

When women are seen as objects it's easier to pay them less for equal work, and to abuse, assault, and rape them. Women in the real world do end up in refrigerators. Just look at the news of the past month.

Many of us addressing this issue make up a community of enlightened thinkers, who are not only capable of deconstructing these images, but are passionate about it. And there IS a conversation between popular culture and actual lives--if there weren't, we wouldn't be so vociferous about the treatment of women in modern mythology.

The calendar isn't just "naked people." It's naked superwomen, with shaved bodies meant to titillate a male audience. It's hard enough to find female superheroes that are good role models for women without them being limited to sexual objects.

There's nothing inherently wrong with "naked people" OR sexual pleasure/expression. It's when that's ALL a women is seen as that's a problem.

I just love how capes (and The Incredibles showed what a disaster those can be!) are necessary, but underwear (necessary in the event of fluids) is not.

And why bother with the teeny tiny skirt at all?

::sigh:; Yes, I know it's porn. It's STUPID porn. Apparently the thought process has not continued to the point that while the viewer drools at the semi-naked woman, she kicks his ass. She doesn't need clothes to do THAT.

So, yes, it's demeaning, but it's demeaning without thought, because if the rocket scientists thought it through, they would realize that in their attempt to drag the woman down, she still hasn't lost the power to blast him into the next dimension, which is going to happen to him right . . . now.

I hate stupid people.

Well said, Tamora.

One of the best scenes in the Sarah Connor Chronicles premiere was of Cameron (the Terminator played by Summer Glau who was sent back to protect John in this version of the myth) kicks the asses of some jock boys who were threatening her. She does it after a time jump, and so is completely nude.

What was so wonderful about it wasn't that it was a naked chick kicking ass (like so many B-movies) but that the focus wasn't on the appearance of her body, which would make her passive, but on the action of her body, which makes her a phenomenon.

On another note, check it out. The Ink-Stained Amazon's comments have been called "Feminist Bitching"

"Its amazing how often feminist bitching exposes me to something really cool I never, ever, would have otherwise heard about. Like this Bad-Ass Rational Madman approved calender, by Nerdcore. Sexy chicks, nude or nearly so, in comics inspired photo shoots?
You know damn well the MadMan's buying this one.
Its like I always say, if you really wanna know what guys like, just ask a feminists what pisses them off."

Maybe this blogger who linked to me has never heard of the idea that "guys" can be feminists too. My husband's the one who informed me of the calendar for the purposes of my blog. He's a guy and a feminist.

A guy feminist is is a eunuch by another name.

Do you keep his balls in your purse, or did you send them in to the vaginal hive mind?

Wow. Baiting.

I'd appreciate it greatly if you didn't come onto my site and belittle my work, my beliefs, or my relationship. This is a space for progressive, passionate thinkers, not people who get off on cruelty, antagonism and silencing tactics. By right, you (unfortunately) have your own space for that.
